The problem with 'just leaving' I work for a newspaper and the competitor (Philadelphia Inquirer) I have worked at before (left on excellent terms) but they aren't hiring. At all. Secondly this newspaper (Burlington County Times) was bought out by Gannett a few years ago and they recognize my time as a part-time employee at a PA newspaper as being an ongoing 16 years. If they were to lay me off (severance) or buy me out they would pay me one week (at current rate) for every year served. I'd be walking away from $15,000 or so if I 'quit' vs 'letting nature take it's course' (they'll get rid of me eventually) So don't quit, just tell your boss everything you've said here and let him choose. Either he'll put "Steve" in his place to keep you happy or nature will take its course earlier and you take your money and look for a job that doesn't drive you crazy. The best time to talk to your boss is when you don't care if you're fired, I know from personal experience. You get what you want more often that way. I agree. If the boss likes you or thinks you're valuable, then you're in a position to have Steve removed from working directly with you. At worst the boss will say fuck you and you'll be in the same position.

The other end of it is that I am part of the 'print media'
Newspapers see their 'future' as being 'digital' (on the computer)
So the print media is the red-headed step child. Don't invest anything in it, get rid of it as soon as you can, etc

I work for Gannett Media - as WOKE as one can get
I oversee two managers and three part-time employees
One manager is Steve. Insubordinate. Always sneaking around behind my back doing 'something'. Back-stabber. Bullshit artist. Knows how to turn on the charm for ten minutes and talk his way out. Has an autistic child at home and of course that has been affecting things. FREE RIDE.
The other manager is Ira. Works another job. Not productive, very slow, very tired. Just on disability (out 90 days) returning and gave me a list of dates 'he needs' followup visits, vacations, etc. He's always sick (caught COVID twice last year) always needs to leave early (doctors visits can't ever reschedule them) FREE RIDE
Then there's Tom. One of three part-time employees. An obvious drinking problem ('sick' every Monday) Someone somewhere negotiated a 'time off for snow' deal with him so he could take off and drive a snow plow before snow (to pre-salt) if a storm was happening and also the day after snow (followup) HAs a sick parent now. FREE RIDE
The guy that comes to work and performs just wonders why he is bothering.
I actually don't think that this is all that unusual in 2024. Working somewhere where the 'commitment level' of others is very low and tolerated 'because we can't have turnover'
Is it like this most places? That half the names on the schedule are just names on the schedule?
