I'm going with the Wire. While I loved the Sopranos, The Shield, Hill Street Blues, and Breaking Bad, those shows ended when they should have. There really wasn't anything left. The Wire, because every season had a different theme, had a few more seasons in them.

I loved the Wire but thought the last series was the weakest by far.
One show I thought was great was a show called Quarry from maybe ten years ago. One aeason and cancelled. Apparently it was from a comic book series and there's tons of books but it just didn't take off.
There was a comedy show called The Grinder with Fred Savage and Rob Lowe that was cancelled after one great series too.
I think most shows that last a long time end up dipping in quality.

I was a fan of early episodes of Sports Night, a show Aaron Sorkin created, but then I wasn't following it when my work schedule conflicted and I hadn't taped it. Sorkin then developed The West Wing and Sports Night was through after only about 40 episodes. It took me a few more years to run across a box set and enjoy the whole series run, and I was reminded the show had plenty left in the tank.

I think 5-6 years is the limit as to putting out high-quality product. The Sopranos and The Larry Sanders Show both lasted 6 seasons and ended at the perfect moment. On the other hand, The Simpsons keeps on going but it was the first half dozen seasons that stand head and shoulders above the rest.

I vividly remember the Sopranos 4th season not being as good as the other three. I thought that maybe it ran its course, but it came back with a vengeance in season 5 when some of the mobsters were let out of prison. But yeah, it got out when it should have without it jumping the shark.

I look at the Simpsons as being two shows: Seasons before the movie, and seasons after the movie. Every episode pre-movie was solid, if not spectacular. Every episode post movie has been just blah blah blah.

Gunsmoke was just hitting it's stride when they yanked it off the air unceremoniously after 635 episodes...

Freaks and Geeks was a tremendous period show that was only around 1 season. Great cast and writing.

Sapphire & Steel, which ended on a cliffhanger that never got resolved.

Boston Public but the writing went off of the rails. The series could have continued with better writing. I cannot find this anywhere to stream or on DVD.

Carnivale needed and had another 3-4 seasons of stories to tell according to the producer and writer. I’d have loved that.
Same with Penny Dreadful, they certainly could have done a season or two more as several characters ended up with unresolved dates. But they planned to end it there and by killing the main character that was pretty much it.

Not disagreeing with the sentiment but think you're doing a disservice to the Simpsons. I gave up on it long ago but I think it was great up to around season 11 or 12, if not beyond that. Carrivale is an interesting answer. I liked it but I always got the feeling the creator didn't really know where it was going. I would have liked more.

Was gonna say I have all of them on a drive but that's Boston Legal (which was pretty great from start to end). Boston Public was something I liked but I remember it going a bit bonkers alright.
