Trooper Pins Wrestlers on Drug Charge By JOHN BURNETT Tribune Herold Central Texas Writer
Professional wrestlers Gino Hernandez and Tiger Conway, Jr. won their matches at Waco's Heart O' Texas Coliseum Saturday night but fell victim several hours later to a Highway Patrol trooper. The grapplers were arrested for possession of marijuana and cocaine as they sped through Marlin on their way to Houston.
Arrested were Eugene Wolfe, Jr. alias Gino Hernandez, 23, 6 feet 2", 223 pounds and the Continental Wrestling world junior heavyweight champion and Plasee Dennis Conway alias Tiger Conway, Jr. 27, 5 feet 11", 230 pounds and the champion of Texas.
BUT THESE TITLES did not deter Department of Public Safety Trooper Bill Cooke who arrested the pair at 11:30 pm Saturday. Cooke spotted a 1981 Pontiac Grand Prix whizzing down State Highway 6 near Marlin. He clocked the car at 77 mph and when he pulled the car over he said the occupants immediately identified themselves as professional wrestlers.
Cooke, 29, 6 foot, 190 pounds said he used to do a little boxing back in the police academy but none of that was needed Saturday night. "They were both very cooperative...they didn't try to put a hammerlock on me." he said.
The driver Hernandez stepped from the car and explained that they had wrestled in Waco earlier that night and were heading back to Houston. Cooke said the car reeked of burning marijuana. A search revealed what appeared to be marijuana cigarettes in the console and four small vials of cocaine in a travel bag and more marijuana and some unidentified pills in the trunk. Cooke arrested the pair and took them to the Falls County jail in Marlin.
HERNANDEZ WAS charged with possession of under two ounces of marijuana and bond was set at $500 by Justice of the Peace Richard Bee. Conway was booked for possession of a controlled substance and marijuana with bond set at $5500
Both men posted bond at 12:37 am Sunday. As Conway gave his vital statistics for the jail record, a television in the booking room was broadcasting one of matches taped several weeks ago. Conway won but as the announcer declared Conway the victor on the flickering tube the man in person shook his head. Cooke said Sheriff Larry Pamplin said the wrestlers were very open to talking, they'd discuss anything you want.
The "men of the mat told" a rapt audience of jailers deputies and other people in the jail that wrestlers put everything thry got into their matches regardless of a popular conception that wrestling is nothing but elaborate acting.
