Claw- Maybe this is a thread you'd stick to the top of the page. In the last week when I've concentrated on researching, I have used this page to quickly switch between calendars for a certain year to verify vague "Last Saturday night" references and the like in the news archives:
www.timeanddate.com/calendar/?year=1986&country=1
That's a direct link to open the 1986 calendar but then you can switch to any year. Are there any other tried-and-true research aids that anyone would recommend?

I also use TimeAndDate.com quite often.
NewspaperArchive.com shows the day of the week in the search results, but Google News and many individual newspaper archive sites don't.
boxrec.com/media/ helped me several times in the past with the info on boxing/wrestling venues. Not many are listed, though.

Just throwing another testimonial for the calendar page as a good cross-check, which was especially helpful in verifying a Google news archive page. A Lexington, NC result and a related article link were billed as being from September 1953. When I tried to match the dates up via the calendar, the day of the week was wrong. Upon closer examination of the headers, I discovered that the papers were actually from September 1958. Just saying that the date the archive gives you may in fact be incorrect, and you should investigate the dates as they are printed in the paper's original typeface.
Hopefully it can lessen inaccuracy in some career records which may have been researched already and where discrepancies have creeped in.

Yep that happens once in a while. That's why I always scroll up and check the date of the paper.

Whilst it does happen, it's uncommon for the newspaper to be listed under the wrong year. What is much more common, is two or more (I've seen more than 10 before) being bunched together on the same day. If you are looking for a specific paper, and it looks like the one you want is missing, have a look at the first date before the date you need, and you might find it filed on that date. Sometimes they are just missing, though.

Another parallel tool I have found helpful is boxrec.com. I figured that many buildings were used for boxing as well as wrestling, and a search engine can find the city if it's difficult to discern from publicity by typing the venue name and "boxrec" with it. Not 100% accurate but at least boxing tried to organize its history at one time.

FWIW, when looking up dates, I use my calendar on my computer clock, takes 3 seconds to access and goes back to 1900.

Google News Archive Search
For the past couple of years, I have been using this tool to search for wrestling clips, results, etc. Everything was working fine until last night. No matter what phrase I typed in, it always came back telling me there were no matches made for my search.
I would usually type in "wrestling" and then a wrestler's name, a venue, state, or whatever I was searching for with that particular phrase. Do you or someone else you know been experiencing the same thing?
Thanks for any help.

This is getting even more bizarre the more I try it! I clicked on your link and first it was coming up "404 File Not Found". The I tried again and it started giving me the "No Results Found" message.
Then I opened up Firefox to try it. Same results. I am currently using Google Chrome as my web browser.
I will just wait to see if the email I sent to Google Support ever gets answered. Thanks for help though.

I get "no results found" when doing exactly the same. Has been that way for me for nearly a year though.

This is strange.I just clicked on the link in my post above and got the 877 results again. I don't know why it would not work for you. Sorry.

Now, mysteriously Google New Archives Search is working properly again. Go figure.
