When I was a kid, we could buy $1 bleacher seats for Jays games at one of the local grocery stores. So a few times a year I'd go to a game, $1 for a ticket, 35 cents each way on the streetcar to the game and a few dollars for food
Fast Forward to this week. Jays are in town and I figured I'd go see one of the games with my wife out of town. Scrolled through the secondary market and got a front row upper deck seat behind home plate for....$1. I'm catching the bus to the game. Turns out there is no fare on public buses currently. Then found out it's $1 drink and hot dog night. So this is like Deja Vu, 45 years later. Gausman is pitching tonight, so hopefully he can get his ass in gear and I can see a rare win in person.

If the crowds are any indication, baseball is in big trouble

If the crowds are any indication, baseball is in big trouble I don't think MLB is concerned with live crowds - especially since it often has midweek games held in the mid-afternoon when most people are still at work. Instead, I think MLB is focused on TV revenue since there seems to be a lot of channels/streamers vying for MLB content. Fox, ESPN, AppleTV, regional sports networks, FUBO, TUBI...I am sure that I am missing some.

Even merchandising has blown up over that time.

MLB parks are being retrofitted to have LESS seats. They took out most of the RF upper deck at Jacobs Field in Cleveland. The newer parks are all being designed with 34-35k instead of the old 50k capacities. Streaming and TV revenue is big, although I know the RSNs were a bit too greedy and there's been a correction.
