I guess it came down to Oakland negotiating a least that had a "mandatory, non-negotiable payment of $97 million over and above the terms of the lease. Honestly if I were the A's, I would have countered with "Here's our 49% of the Stadium Ownership, we will play here for free for three years and you'll get all of the money from concessions and parking".

the 6 games the A's played this season netted them about 36000 fans. Bart train let's them out right next to stadium. A's are gonna lose money no matter what.

Terrible situation no matter what in Oakland, and it's only going to get worse at the Coliseum this year.

You are a local somewhat out there, correct? Meaning you are in the A's market... Was that supposed Stadium/neighborhood that they talked about building for a couple of billion going to happen/was it real? Or was it just a pipe dream that would've taken 20 years to get through the city, and by then the price would've tripled? I mean, I don't blame the Raiders for moving when they did, and I certainly don't blame the A's for moving, especially with all of the plumbing problems that the Coliseum has. But did the Raiders really fuck over the Coliseum, or did they do that to themselves? I mean, the deal with the Raiders it seems that the Coliseum did the absolute bare minimum when it came to upgrading the stadium from 1966 standards to 1995 standards...and it's needed more renovations for at least ten years. John Madden said the Oakland Coliseum is the greatest location for a stadium in sports and said they should raze the place and build a new stadium right on the same piece of land, or build it in the parking lot and then blow up the old stadium.
So for anybody else reading along, the Oakland Coliseum is the poster child for why stadiums like the Georgia Dome are now considered outdated. They get a brand new stadium, they do nothing to keep it pristine, and it just goes to hell. Shea Stadium opened two years before Oakland, while Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia all opened their cookie cutters after Oakland, and all of those stadiums have been imploded.

The Coliseum was never built strictly for baseball. The sightlines apparently are horrible. They have way too much foul territory. The seats in the upper deck have no shade. That said, before Mount Davis was built, that view over the outfield was gorgeous. I always hoped they would tear that monstrosity down and do a full renovation and go back to the original design with some improvements.

I live about 12 miles away from the Oakland Coliseum. The new stadium location was a waterfront one like the Giants have. It was liked by the mayor and A's ownership. It couldn't get funding. Port of Oakland is where they load and unload those large shipping containers. City council members also didn't like losing all those high paying jobs.
