In the "Third Basemen of the 1970s" thread, I bitched and moaned about how Doug DeCinces' trade from the Baltimore Orioles to the California Angels brought in "Disco" Dan Ford who took over right field from Ken Singleton (my favorite player) and also enabled Cal Ripken Jr to become the everyday third baseman for the Orioles and "take over" the #3 batting spot from Singleton. This move devastated me as a child and I still haven't forgiven Ripken for it. I should probably see a therapist...
Have there been any trades / roster changes that you are still bitter about?

Goose Gossage signs a free agent deal with the Padres really bothered me. Then they talked to Graig Nettles in Spring Training and he said that Billy Martin had no input to any of the roster changes and he didn't think that he would have agreed to let Goose go, and it was an awful move. A couple of days later, the Yanks traded Nettles to San Diego to be with his buddy. Got nothing of value in return, may as well have just released him. To me that was the end of MY Yankees. I became a Padres and Mets fan...until Mattingly came up. When his number switched from 46 to 23, and he became the starting 1B, he really got me interested because of how hard he hit the ball. And the Yankees were right in not re-signing Gossage because he was about done. He didn't change his eating habits, conditioning, or the way that he pitched until 1990 when he was forced to play in Japan, and by that point he had flamed out so badly as a closer that all he could get was a middle innings job. To this day he's still pissed that the last strike ended his career as he was really hoping to play for the Rockies.

Emmitt Smith leaving the Dallas Cowboys and signing as a free agent with the Arizona Cardinals in 2003 was difficult for me to accept and I considered Smith to have been betrayed by the Cowboys similar to how Tom Landry had exited years before. Bill Parcells had been brought in as the new head coach and he wanted to go with younger running backs. Smith went to Arizona and I was mad because: a) Smith had a good offensive line in Dallas, he was going to get killed in Arizona and b) I would never get to see Smith in a televised game again because Arizona rarely played a nationally televised game.
I think that Smith's departure from the Cowboys was the last meaningful exit from the team and ended the dynasty that the Cowboys had built in the 1990s. Since then, I have hoped that the Cowboys never win another Super Bowl title under Jerry Jones.

Jaromir Jagr gets traded for a bunch of nobodys.
Penguins were in financial distress and Jagr indicated he wanted to be traded since a satisfactory team could not be built around him.

As a Mavs fan I was heartbroken when they tore up the trio of Nash/Dirk/Finley, with Nash going to Phoenix in 2004 and Finley the next year to San Antonio, because they were such a fun and exciting team to watch. It hurt for a while with Nash winning back-to-back MVP and Finley finally winning the NBA title with SA, and even more so after the Mavs choking in the 2006 Finals after being up 2-0 against Miami and then having a 67-15 record the next year and being eliminated in the first round. The pain didn't go away until they finally won the NBA title in their rematch against the Heat in 2011.

The Giants traded Willie McCovey AND Bernie Williams to the Padres for bum of a pitcher Mike Caldwell. Its also the same day John Brodie announced his retirement.
Giants sell Juan Marichal to the Boston Redsox.
Niners trade Joe Montana, Dave Whitmore, and a third rounder for KC's #1 pick. Pick turned out to be Dana Stubblefield (may he rot in prison)who was a good player but the trade shocked everyone in the Bay Area.

Got benched halfway through the season.

The Candadiens trading a prime Chris Chelios for a fading Denis Savard soured me on that franchise for good. Chelly had 15+ more productive, often Norris caliber seasons, while Savard was in the press box a couple years later.

The Red Wings trading Dino Ciccarelli for a 4th round draft pick. I liked his grittiness, but he didn't buy in to Scotty's system & the move was for the best.
Also the Wings trading Dallas Drake in the Bob Essensa deal. It was Essensa for Tim Cheveldae with Drake and Sergei Bauotin thrown in. Drake was one of my favorite players, and Sergei never played in the NHL again. Vladimir Konstantinov's scouting report on Baoutin was, "He's really slow." To make it worse Essensa was supposed to bring the Wings the Cup and he couldn't even win the starting job from 18 year old call up Chris Osgood.
Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson walking away from the Lions.
The Angels trading away my two favorite young players. In 81 or 82 they traded away Tom Brunanski for Doug Corbett and Rob Wilfong. Corbett was supposed to be the closer that they were missing to push them over the top but it didn't work out. In 90 or 91 they traded Dante Bichette for an old Dave Parker.

The 1997-1998 Chicago Bulls team dominated the league and won the NBA Finals for a third consecutive time (6th championship in 8 years - I wonder what would have happened had Jordan not "retired" in 1993). The 1998-1999 season brought a whole different team:
- Head coach Phil Jackson retired - Michael Jordan retired - Scottie Pippen traded to the Houston Rockets - Dennis Rodman signed with the Los Angeles Lakers
Toni Kukoc and Ron Harper were the most notable returns for the team but they couldn't perform a miracle as the Bulls finished the strike-shortened season with the worst record in the Eastern Conference (third worst record in the entire NBA).
I watch a lot of 1990s Chicago Bulls games on YouTube now to relive the nostalgia. At the time, I didn't realize what a really great team the Chicago Bulls were and the effect that Michael Jordan had on the game. To me, the NBA games of today just can't compete with the entertainment level that the NBA games of the 90s provided.
I have watched "The Last Dance" and it was sad to me how the team kind of imploded. I think the Bulls could have had a couple more great seasons in them if the management and Scottie Pippen could have worked things out and Rodman could have worked out his issues. My interest in the NBA was briefly restored when Michael Jordan returned from retirement and played for my hometown Washington Wizards. Unfortunately, he didn't have a strong supporting cast around him and Father Time had also taken its toll.
There will never be a team like the 1990s Chicago Bulls.

Dale Hawerchuk from Winnipeg to the Fuckoffalo Sabres. Phil Housley played three seasons for the Jets, tallying 76, 86, and 97 points respectively. And then they dealt him when he had another decade in the tank. That's even worse.

Phil Simms getting cut in favor of Dave Brown.
LT had just retired at the end of the previous season. Simms had shoulder surgery coming off a pro bowl but was 38 years old. George Young didn't want to pay his salary, so he was cut and decided to retire.
That was the end of the 80s Giants.
