This year's lineup is not good IMO. Motley Crue and Limp Bizkit are awful headliners, I'm seeing Foo Fighters later this summer anyway, and Slipknot is Slipknot. A few of the openers are OK-ish but this isn't one I would go out of my way to see (other than The Struts, who are fantastic). Hopefully the weather holds up at least and they get everyone in.

First show of the year for me this past weekend. Here are my thoughts...
Venue: Whitewater Amphitheater, New Braunfels, Texas
First time here. New Braunfels is a mid size town in the Texas Hill Country which is mostly famous for being the home of the original Schlitterbahn Waterpark. It is a really nice area on the Guadalupe River and the Venue is kinda cool. It is a bit rustic and simple, but it works and fits in perfectly for the area. They had per-paid parking for $20 (which is a huge + from me) which was super limited, but maybe a 100 yard walk to the gate. Drink prices were reasonable ($3.00 for a bottle of water). The only negative was the restroom situation. Only portables available.
Opening Band: Mike's Dead
I had never heard of them. They ended up being pretty good. Standard newish rock/metal sound which fit in with the rest of the show. They are a 3 piece and the drummer doubled as the merch guy as he was in the merch tent almost the entire show when they were not playing. He was super cool and talkative. I believe they had 30 minutes and played 4 or 5 songs. Limited interaction with the crowd which is a good thing. I will definitely check them out at Rockville this weekend.
2nd Band: Kim Dracula
Holy shit. These guys are 10 out of 10 on the weird ass shit o meter and it was glorious. The music is all over the place with heavy guitar, growling and singing vocals, rapping and a random saxophone here and there. Surprisingly, it works for me. LOL. It's just silly enough to make me smile and just heavy enough to make me bang my head. A couple of the tunes are catchy enough to sing along. Songs to check out are Killdozer, The Bard's Last Note, and Land of the Sun. Be prepared, it is out there, but it is fun.
Co-Headliner: Motionless in White
Probably the most popular of the 4 bands. I am not super familiar with them, but I know the popular songs. They were really good as well. Lead singer is very engaging with the crowd and is a natural front man. It is crazy how he goes from singing to screaming to growling so effortlessly an still has a normal voice when speaking. I didn't realize they had been around for 20 years. Overall good time.
Co-Headliner: In This Moment
My wife's favorite band. I like them too, but they are kinda hit or miss with me. A few songs are heavy and fun, but the rest just drone on and on and repeat themselves. They are really known for their stage show. We saw them at Rockville a few years back with the limited stage show and only 5 or 6 songs so we wanted to see them again for a full show. Was kinda disappointed that we actually did see mostly the entire show at Rockville. They barely played an hour and only played 8 songs at the "full show". It was so smoky at times from the smoke machines that it was hard to see and her voice was kinda off a few times. Honestly I'm really nit picking here. The show is very theatrical and cool and they closed the show with Whore which is always fun. After they finished they came down and posed and waved to the crowd which was interesting because they often get the reputation of divas.
Afterwards:
We were out of the parking lot and on the way home in less than 10 minutes. Crazy how easy it was to get in and out.
Final Thoughts:
Overall we had a great time and enjoyed all of the bands and the venue. This venue has mostly been home for country and Texas music like Willie Nelson and Dwight Yoakum. Hopefully they continue to book heavier music. I estimate there were probably 3-5k people there which was almost capacity.
Next Show:
Welcome to Rockville in Daytona Beach, Florida.

It’s Concert Week for those hoping to pick up $25 all-inclusive tickets. I might try for Megadeth/Mudvayne.

Not gonna start a new thread, but $25 Concert Week was another unmitigated disaster for Ticketmaster as their site crashed immediately and wasn't working properly for 4 hours, by which point thousands of fans were flaming them on social media for (almost) a Taylor Swift level fuck up. I can't wait until this anti-trust case.

Bought my tickets through the pre-sale. A different type of show for me, but I’m looking forward to it. I've seen Willie before. He's a legend. Enjoy. I saw Willie in 1994 in Stamford CT at a small theater. I think he was on the Ric Flair schedule that year, wrestling 400 shows because he did two on weekends. That was after he lost everything to the Taxman. So even though he was quite a bit older in '94, he had toured so much that I believe his voice was never better and that includes the shows in the '70s he was doing with Waylon and the Outlaws. That old bastard put together a little over two hours and we knew all but the absolutely brand new couple of songs from his new album at the time. I know that was 30 years ago, but I would still recommend Willie. He isn't as good, but it never stops him from giving his best effort and his band is really tight.

I always follow Rockville online and it seems like this was the year to go. First time in 5 or 6 years that I didn’t hear anything about the weather. I thought the lineup was lacking a bit, especially with Limp Bizkit and Jelly Roll headlining that one day. Of the bands you listed, there’s no one i had to see that I haven’t seen a few times before or have no desire to see (and I already spent a fortune on Foo Fighter tix for later this summer). But I hope to get to this festival one of these days. The year I came really close to going was the year GNR headlined and almost everything was washed out, so I am very thankful I didn’t blow a couple grand on that trip. But one year.
What did you think of In Flames? I saw them open for Within Temptation in 2019 and they blew me away. So I got a bunch of their albums and saw them headline for the first time at a small venue in Brooklyn last month, and they were fantastic.

In Flames was tremendous. We saw them with Lamb of God last year as well and have tickets for them again later this month. We were really close for them at Rockville. So much energy.

My opinion about attending a festival is that it is more about the lower tier bands. You can get real up close and personal with many of them and get the full experience. I'm not a mosh pit or crowd surfer guy, but I do like to be up close and feel the energy that the band and the crowd brings. If you want to be close for the headliners, you would need to camp out at their stage for most of the day. In my opinion, not worth it. I have been perfectly happy watching Foo Fighters and Limp Bizkit from a distance. I feel like I get my money's worth in both instances.

I have been perfectly happy watching Foo Fighters and Limp Bizkit from a distance. I feel like I get my money's worth in both instances. Most of these bands come through NY and play small venues, so I've gotten a chance to see many of them very close. But as I get older, I can't stand for 4-5 hours anymore without feeling it in my lower back for days afterwards. And at the In Flames show a few weeks ago, I moved back halfway though because my moshing days are behind me and it was a pretty rowdy crowd. I paid my dues in those pits for 25+ years, Slayer and all the bands that invented this shit, so I don't mind being a pussy at 47 and giving that real estate back to the kids. Instead of always grabbing a front row center spot like I used to, I usually stand in front of the sound board now for GA shows, or I sit in the bleachers if there are any seats. I watch the chaos from a distance and marvel at the fact that moshing and crowd surfing still somehow haven't been outlawed in 2024 even though everything else has been. I'm glad some kids are still into it and not just watching the shows through their phones while trying to find something to be offended about.
