Terry Funk won the NWA title from Jack Brisco on December 10, 1975. Less than two years before this, Dory Funk, Jr. had been the NWA champion. Was there any specific reason why Jack Brisco dropped the title? Was Brisco not drawing? Did the NWA see Funk having more drawing power? I thought Funk would have held onto the title longer. Was it his dabbling in the movies that made him less appealing as a world champion pro wrestler? In thinking about drawing power, I would have thought that the NWA would have rather rode it out with Terry Funk than Harley Race. Funk also received the PWI honors of Wrestler of the Year for 1976. Terry Funk not only won the NWA title but he also received a big push as he secured a victory over Lou Thez in 1975. This had been absent for Funk since he and Thez first squared off in 1969. Going back before he captured the title, Funk teamed with Bruno Sammartino in Japan 1972. The rest of Funk’s career is well-documented, but it seems he had big drop-off after his success in the mid1970’s.

I always thought Jack Brisco wanted to drop the belt because he was burnt out from the travel.

I always thought Jack Brisco wanted to drop the belt because he was burnt out from the travel. Same with Funk. He dropped the title to save his marriage. His wife had left him at the time.

I don’t think there was any travel schedule more brutal than being NWA champion in the mid- ‘70s to early ‘80s. People like to talk about the WWF schedule in the mid-‘80s, but I don’t think anything documented has been worse.

Dory or Terry? Also as to Rossi’s point, I’ve seen the yearly booking sheet for flair circa 1981/82, and it’s ridiculous. Nick Bockwinkel said the travel and schedule made the higher pay of an NWA champ vs what he was being paid by Verne as AWA champ completely not worth it.

Same with Funk. He dropped the title to save his marriage. His wife had left him at the time. Dory or Terry? Terry. When Dory was champion he had a fairly easy schedule comparatively. Very loosely, he worked three or four full weeks in different territories, then had a week "off". Most of those weeks off he worked in Amarillo, so he was at least at home. He also liked to take his family to Hawaii for a week and work one big match. As his reign went on, he was more likely to not wrestle on his week off, or just work a single show. Brisco and Terry had completely different schedules. They would hop between territories, working the biggest shows they could. They'd hit 7 big towns in Mid-Atlantic, Georgia and Florida all in the same week for example.
