"A decision that we’ve made should be a benefit for everyone who subscribes to this publication, yet when you do something a certain way for so long and it’s been so successful historically, it is hard to make changes.
In short, the mail version of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter will be no more effective with the 12/11 issue. The Observer itself will continue as an online publication and for the vast majority of you there will be no real changes."

Great memories are now memories forever. On the east coast the Observer would typically arrive with Saturday's mail, but not always, which meant a wait until Monday. It was always with some trepidation that I'd check the mailbox on Saturday, hoping I'd lucked out and got the Observer early enough to know the latest news prior to most of that weekend's televised shows.

I'm surprised they kept mailing physical copies this long. It's not like it was a glossy magazine with photos. Print it yourself if you want a hard copy.

It was never available on the website in PDF form, but it will be starting at the end of December. It would have taken 70-80 pages a week to print it yourself in the past

The fucking observer was 70-80 pages a week? I remember it being in an incomprehensible format. Just overlapping articles on different pages and tons of results that people sent in, which probably took up much of the space. Small print and the disorganized thoughts of Meltzer throughout, with nary a regard for the English language. It could be tough to get through. I don’t remember it being 80 pages though, the Torch and Lariat were pretty small. Can’t remember the price points of all of them in comparison though. |

The current Observer is usually 22-24 pages a week. But if you copy it into a standard word document, it would come out to about 80 pages (over 40,000 words). If it was in PDF, it will still be no more than 24 pages

The thing for me that always bulked out the Observer was all the MMA news. How many wrestling fans are interested enough in MMA that they want to read about it from Meltzer? I'm sure there are no MMA fans (who aren't also hardcore wrestling fans) who subscribe.

I have been an Observer subscriber for ages, but have not taken the print version for many years. I stopped for several reasons.
Too often the printed copies arrived in terrible condition, occasionally unreadable, due whatever the USPS was doing to it. I started reading it online and finished before the printed copy came. I kept all the printed copies and found the amount of space they took up was becoming a problem.

The crossover of wrestling fans to MMA was pretty big in the period roughly from 2005 to 2015. The WWE was up and down in quality. It had no competition within pro wrestling due to WCW dying. Even at its strongest, TNA/Impact wasn’t competition. The scene in Japan was down. All Japan ceased to be a major league group as did NOAH while New Japan had some rough times. Meanwhile UFC had colorful fighters, good action, and somehow created stars and compelling matchups in a legit sport better than worked pro wrestling groups that can control who wins and how. MMA filled a void for fans and for Meltzer. He was right to take that path and is right to stay on it. Pro wrestling made a big comeback, but all booms are followed by downturns. When it happens, he has additional content with an audience instead of having to start from scratch. |

He was covering it in the Observer from before the UFC started. I don't see it as some savvy business move to plug a gap in his sales. |
