And how did Trump do? Fuck that, too easy. Let's make it hurt and ask how Reagan did? There hasn't been a Republican who has had even the slightest degree of fiscal responsibility since Coolidge. Everyone else is working the marks. He’ll, the last Republican CANDIDATE that even made a good faith effort to sound like he cared about this was Goldwater.

I'd maybe even say Hoover was the last Republican. Coolidge saw the iceberg on the horizon and didn't help the farmers. Hoover was the captain of the ship, and if memory serves me correctly, he didn't break the bank to get us out of the Depression. And it doesn't help that we're off the gold standard.

But if you're going to talk about the GOP as a party, and not just the President, it was under Bush II that they first had total control of the government and did fuck all to cut spending. The same occured with Trump, again the party as a whole made clear they had no stomach for doing what they promised they'd do. Reagan? Dems controlled the House and the purse strings, but he was the first sucker who believed their "give us A now and we'll let you have B later". Still, the buck stops here and all that, so he's no innocent. But ultimately it was during W's regime that it became clear the party was just conning the voters with their "fiscal responsibility" pitch.

The fiscal responsibility part went away almost a century before GWB, but I agree that it was under Cheney (I refuse to even acknowledge GWB as having much to do with anything since that dolt barely knew he was President) that the office of the Executive expanded exponentially. I’ve said before and I’ll say again that almost all our problems date back to Woodrow Wilson, the worst President ever, but Cheney poured gasoline on the fire and changed the job description forever, completely shredding checks and balances and our Constitution. Of course, I don’t remember a single Republican voter, media personality, or congressman having fuck all to say about it until many years later when Trump told them what to think about it. They sure seemed on board to me. I did live through after all and argued with them on these very boards, as well as elsewhere.

My ideal presidential candidate would propose to cut entitlements while at the same time committing to cutting defense spending, specifically the defense contractors.
And when I say cuts, I think more oversight and auditing for both the entitlements and the defense spending would in itself cut costs.

And when I say cuts, I think more oversight and auditing for both the entitlements and the defense spending would in itself cut costs. That would be great and will never happen. Neither side has the stomach to cut entitlements or defense, which is where so much of the waste is. They literally swear that we’ll all be laying naked in mud if we took a dime out of either. The grift is beyond comprehension.

With the dismal GDP quarterly report, are we in a stagflation?
