“the heat was going to be on Randy”
Wasn’t that the point? They were taking the belt off UW after nine months and had to have a good reason. I thought the finish as-is was perfect.

I think that was the point from Vince’s perspective. He probably figured that Slaughter was going to have nuclear heat based on the gimmick anyway. But from Slsughter’s perspective, I guess I could see that he wants the spotlight more on him when he finally wins the title. It was done the way it should’ve been though.

They were building to two big matches at WM. Savage vs Warrior and Slaughter vs the USA (Hogan).

I don't buy the Village Voice theory because nobody in the business considers themselves unworthy of being main event material, especially someone with Sarge's career accomplishments to that point. Plus Vince calling him a longtime employee who was reliable would have come less than six months after his WWF return from Slaughter's 5-year exile where he held his ground on his Hasbro GI-Joe deal and lost his spot because of it. Upon his WWF return they spent that time building Sarge with victories over Nikolai Volkoff and Jim Duggan. The extra Iraqi-sympathizer stuff may have been icing, but Vince had plans for Sarge on top from that September 1990 restart. All of this. No way the Village Voice story is remotely the way it went down. They no doubt were told that story, but it’s a complete work. So you're doubting the Village Voice. Anti-Semitic much?
