In the days before streaming, maybe one of the last cultural touchstones where the whole country was gathered around a TV watching the same thing at the same time. USA vs Russia Olympic hockey 1980 could be another. 9-11 another. The reading of the verdict might be there I cant say I watched that though.

The chase was more out of left field than the verdict in my opinion, so it stands out more in my mind. 9-11 may be bigger, but it was also like 6 years into the internet age (in my eyes the internet started in 1995 even though it was terrible and things weren't streaming) 1980 USA Hockey and the Shuttle Explosion with the teacher Christa Mccullough are up there in my opinion.

If you’re going to go back to 1980, then of course there were a ton. I’m just saying the OJ chase was probably the last. 9/11 is a bit different, it was 24/7 news coverage for a week but there wasn’t a particular moment except for maybe at the beginning when everyone tuned in to TV, but as you mentioned the Internet was already a thing by then. I remember more about trying to log onto CNN.com at work and the page repeatedly crashing because the bandwidth in 2001 couldn’t handle it than I remember anything of the early news coverage.

To expand the topic a little more, besides maybe some World Cup matches, I imagine Live Aid may be the most viewed event watched by the largest percenct of people globally at one time?

Did OJ ever involve himself in wrestling? If you believe Bruce Prichard, he was close to appearing at WM 12 where he would have been in a match with Roddy Piper.

We all planned to watch the shuttle in Middle School. I didn't feel well that day and stayed home. But I watched it - it was a big deal. And while I didn't watch it, the 1980 Olympics was also planned viewing. The OJ Bronco chase ranks up there with pretty much ANY major event where word of mouth got everybody to turn on the TV and watch the havoc. 9/11 was the same situation, although pretty much the entire eastern time zone was on their way to work and it didn't take 15 minutes for word to spread.

I was the host at a restaurant during the chase. The cash register was in the bar area and we were watching the NBA Finals when the coverage changed.
I was in my second year of teaching when the verdict was announced. We listened to it on the radio.

I heard the verdict on the radio too, while at work. We all stood around listening. I think that was pretty common.

I wish I'd thought of this, but I saw a comment elsewhere that referenced Norm. It suggested that he would have said, "In an amazing coincidence, the real killer of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman died on the very same day, in the same hospital, and of the same cause as O.J. Simpson."

And people didn't always like them, and when they didn't...he would just tell more. He fucking HATED OJ with a passion. That was a very fun time. "Prince Charles wrote a book where he says he never loved Diana at all, it's titled 'Of Course OJ Did It'."

Made In America is one of the best documentaries I've ever seen.
