Thursday, January 14, 1965 – Sports Arena – Amarillo, TX Johnny Valentine defeated North American Heavyweight Champion Dory Funk, Sr. via blood stoppage in three falls (referee: Bill Graham) The main event was billed as a “fight to the finish”, but was stopped by the referee due to Funk bleeding. Due to the controversial finish, Valentine claimed he should be awarded the title. --------------------------------------------------------- I don't think this is correct at all. There is no mention of any blood stoppage in the January 15, 1965 Amarillo Globe-Times. "Dory Sr applied a spinning toehold in the 3rd fall and Valentine gave up, but referee Ken Lucas had been knocked from the ring during the mixup. When Lucas returned, he didn't realize what happened. Valentine grabbed Funk and pinned him with a press at 6:45. Johnny then grabbed the championship belt and ran off, while Funk and many of the fans were protesting." According to wrestlingtitlehistories, the title was declared as held up and vacant pending a rematch on 1/28/65, which went to a 60 minute draw. Valentine finally wins the title on February 10, 1965 Loads of stuff in this list is incorrect. I stopped updating this a long, long time ago. Not enough people read it for the effort that I put in with all the issues with the formatting on the old site. WrestlingData is far more up to date.

Kriss I noticed you edited your post from last night. Was too tired to post last night but happy to see you removed the part about deleting the whole thread. While not enough people read it for the effort you put in is true sadly there are those of us who do and appreciate the hard work and seeing the results here is easier than doing so on WrestlingData though I frequent that and other results sites to see if anything is different. But I'm going to rely on what I see here first and foremost from someone who has taken the time to actually research for clippings and results from newspapers online. I'd like to see more discussion on the territories and results but sadly mnay of those who could comment are gone and I do think it's ok for someone else to post they have a different result for a card or additional information if they can cite a legitimate source and for discussion but not coming in and saying that what they have is exactly 100% correct. Kriss, keep up the good work that you do. There are those who greatly appreciate it.

On the old board, most of what I added to threads in 2021-22 had a clipping or image as source material. It might not have been accurate afterward, but it was the base of the advertising, so in theory it was what a promoter was planning to book. Whether or not it deserves merit for updates is always debatable; I can only stand behind the fact I scrounged up something that may or may not have already been found, which is why the images were saved. Too bad we lost so much with the changeover.

These are Don Slatton cards. He booked 99% of his wrestlers from the Amarillo office until Murdoch & Mulligan took over. The way the Amarillo territory worked, each individual promoter was able to bring in outside talent. Slatton sometimes brought in guys from Dallas, and at this time, the Von Erich boys were working in West Texas quite regularly. You'll see something similar on the Western end of the territory where Mike London in Albuquerque and Gory Guererro in El Paso would sometimes bring in Mil Mascaras and El Santo from Mexico or Black Gordman & Goliath from California but they wouldn't tour the Amarillo circuit.
